As we usually say in Colombia “we celebrate even when get together to change a light bulb”. It is not for nothing that we are recognized as one of the most festive countries in the world. In Colombia we celebrate all the saints, we celebrate mothers, fathers, women, men, children... Anyway, being one of the happiest countries in the world must have a well-founded basis.
For colombians the traditional date to celebrate love is in September. It is not an exact date, we are simply guided by the second weekend of September. However, several years ago we also opted for the American tradition of celebrating Valentine’s Day on February 14. And, who wouldn´t be happy to have two dates in the year to celebrate love?
Our celebration of Valentine’s Day, -although it does not diminish the importance of Love and Friendship in September-, it for sure is a date that we take to demonstrate our affection to couples. Traditionally we give flowers, which is also very common to get in the street, chocolates or even go out to eat at a special restaurant as a couple.
If you are a foreigner living in Colombia you will surely have already noticed that on February 14 or even a couple of days before, our streets are filled with flowers to buy and give away. Now, you have no doubt that in Colombia we also celebrate Valentine’s Day.
